Gion evening tour
Duration: 3.5 hours

We had a great time on the Gion evening tour with Takakaai. It was so much more than just Geisha chasing , which in itself is a bit like going whale watching, a bit hit and miss. We learnt a lot about Kyoto and Japan and got to see so much in a short space of time. What is really good is his immense well spring of knowledge and the ability the guide has to impart that and also to contextualise and debate as well. Something for everyone and next time we’re in Kyoto hopefully it won’t rain all the time and we can take the bike tour too! Thanks for a great tour.

Overview

Explore the back streets and alleyways of Kyoto’s Geisha districts in Gion and enjoy the contrast between the vibrant daytime and the serene evening after the crowds disappear. The urban wonders of the ancient capital Kyoto at dusk in the Gion district cannot be missed.

Itinerary

The tour starts by strolling along the lovely Shirakawa canal. You’ll be surprised how quickly you can move away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets. We’ll take you to the Geisha districts where you might be able to catch a glimpse of Geisha walking along the street. As the light fades and night falls, we’ll transition to the Yasaka/Higashiyama area. Here, we’ll enjoy walking along laneways in the historically preserved district, seeing a 5-story pagoda with its stunningly intricate structure before arriving at Yasaka Shrine, a major Shinto Shrine in Kyoto. After briefly taking a look at a quirky shrine where a deity of beauty is enshrined we’ll head over to a local restaurant to have a light meal and conclude the tour.

This tour is not available on Sundays.
